Sainte Jeanne d'Arc

Born in Domrémy in Lorraine during the Hundred Years’ War which saw English troops invade the kingdom of France and the King of England claim the throne, Joan of Arc grew up in a family of notable peasants.

At the age of thirteen, while tending the flocks, she heard voices which presented themselves as those of the Archangel Saint Michael, Saint Catherine of Alexandria and Saint Marguerite. For three years, these celestial voices trained her to carry out a double mission: to take the dauphin Charles to Reims to be crowned there and to “kick” the English out of France.

In March 1429, she managed to go to Chinon where the future king, won over by her sincerity, entrusted her with an army which she subjugated with her common sense and her moral strength: in eight days, she delivered the besieged city of Orléans for seven months. Thanks to the tenacity of Jeanne, and in particular at Patay on June 18, the English army and its archers were crushed. Charles VII was anointed and crowned King of France in Reims on July 17.

Unfortunately, Charles VII, poorly advised, will gradually let go of her. In 1430, she was taken prisoner in Compiègne by the Burgundians who handed her over to the English. She spent a year in prison and endured a trial in Rouen under the leadership of Pierre Cauchon, bishop of Beauvais and acquired by the enemy. Despite her repartee and her luminous answers, she is condemned as a heretic and a relapse under the pretext of the man’s clothing she wears to accomplish her mission. Despite her doubts and her great loneliness, supported by her voices, she keeps her faith.

She was burned alive on May 30, 1431, at the age of nineteen, on the Place du Vieux Marché in Rouen. She gives up her spirit by pronouncing the name of Jesus and her ashes are scattered in the Seine. Many in the public are horrified: “We burned a saint!” “. His mother, Isabella the “Romea”, obtained from Pope Nicholas V the review of the heresy trial which was overturned in the court of appeal in 1456.
